"I was a comedian from birth. Mum always said I should have been in radio and dad always said I should have been on the stage - the Cobb and Co stage," he said, laughing loudly.
Mr Jones will tell you he is only killing time until he gets his Gold Card and then he's hitting the road - or in his case the trains or the ferry.
"I'm going on a long trip. I'll catch the train to the Big Smoke and jump on the ferry to the South Island. Maybe I'll head for Auckland; I've heard it's free with a Gold Card to go to Waiheke Island. I'm going to travel the land on my Gold Card."
Jokes aside, he's looking forward to serving up fun to people at the resource centre in King St every Friday.
"I was looking for something to do and my daughter said I'd get on well with the lady who runs this show because she is a Jones," he said.
He seems to fit in well, too.
"I've been popping in for five weeks now. I just love sorting through things and I really love seeing the joy on people's faces when they find themselves a bargain for a dollar. Finding a treasure in the recycling - it's great. Some people like to be tucked away, I like to talk to people and be doing something."
Centre co-ordinator Trudie Jones said Cliff was an absolute delight to have around the place.
"He's beyond being good. He restores things and makes the other guys feel happy about work. He's so good with the customers and he can see the value in recycling," she said.
The centre has about 20 people on the books who regular turn up for shifts; some are in training for employment and the agency has already helped about 20 young people into jobs in the past year.
The centre needs pre-loved clothing, bedding, furniture and other goods.
