The cleaner who told police about a bleeding, half-naked girl she saw running from a public toilet is devastated by what happened and wishes she could go back to that morning.
The woman called police at 10am on Friday after seeing a blonde-haired little girl run crying from the toilets at Neville Power Memorial Park in Te Atatu South.
A man followed her out of the toilets and ran in the opposite direction.
The cleaner could not find the girl and there have been no further sightings of her.
Yesterday, as the cleaner returned to the park, she trembled with the memory of what had happened.
"She was still shaken," said a Kirrie Ave resident who sat with her. "She got out of the car and her legs were like jelly. She nearly collapsed."
The resident, who wants to be known only as Sarah, said the cleaner wished she could go back to Friday and help the child.
"She wished she had made a few different decisions but she said it happened so quickly."
Sarah said the woman could not even look at the toilets as her colleague cleaned them for her yesterday. The woman has been supported at work and will not have to clean at the park until she feels up to it.
Police investigating her report have not been able to identify the young girl, despite widespread publicity about the case.
All female students from six local schools have been accounted for.
Police communications manager Jayson Rhodes said it was impossible to know what may have occurred in the toilets unless the girl was identified.
The results of blood samples are not expected before the end of the week.
