Clean technology: A Norweigian energy company, based an hour south of Oslo, has been researching osmotic power - energy created by the principle of osmosis where particles move from high to low concentration.
Statkraft, which is championing the research, is currently using technology to extract heat energy where salty water molecules from the sea move into freshwater in places where rivers meet the ocean.
Energy can be extracted by using a semipermeable barrier between saltwater and freshwater and skimming the heat energy as the sea water rushes through.
Reverse osmosis is commonly used to filter water.
