KEY POINTS:
A man who robbed a Christchurch bank may have no respect for the law, but apparently he does respect the environment.
The man entered the Barrington branch of the Westpac bank about 1.20pm yesterday and threatened tellers with a tool similar to a chisel or screwdriver, ordering them to put money into a green, reusable eco-friendly bag.
He then ran from the bank and was seen getting into a stolen red Ford Telstar that had been in the bank's carpark. He drove off towards central Christchurch.
During his get-away, the stolen car nearly collided with another motorist at a nearby intersection.
The stolen car was found in a nearby street, minus the robber, with the engine still running. It had been stolen from a car park at a branch of The Warehouse that afternoon.
The offender was described as European, aged about 25-35 years, about 1.78m tall, of medium build and clean shaven.
He wore dark glasses, a black beanie-style hat, leather work gloves, a green jacket with a yellow facing across the upper front, and blue denim jeans.
Police were also seeking the motorist who nearly collided with the fleeing man.
