Data gathered from volcanic mountainsides, thermal valleys and shearing sheds will go toward NCEA credits for 38 Wairarapa College geography students.
A field trip at the end of term one took the students four days to complete and took the group on a journey through the Tongariro Crossing, Huka Falls, Rotorua (including the Agrodrome, Museum and Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley) and scaling Mount Ruapehu by chairlift.
Head of geography Charmaine Nelson said the students were looking specifically at volcanic geographical features and the vegetation formed as a result of lava flows.
In Rotorua, the group focus was on human geography, cultural processes and tourism development.
"This is an annual trip for the Year 13s and they learn more in those four days than they do all year as the students undergo hands-on and real life learning.
