Prime Minister Helen Clark has won a United Nations award for her efforts to fight climate change. The annual United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Champions of the Earth award recognises individuals from each region of the world who have shown "extraordinary" leadership on environmental issues.
Other winners were: Prince Albert II of Monaco; former US Senator Timothy E. Wirth; Sudan researcher Balgis Osman-Elasha; Bangladesh's Atiq Rahman; former Barbados Energy and Environment Minister Liz Thompson; and Secretary General of the Yemen People's General Congress Abdul-Qader Ba-Jammal.
