Former Prime Minister Helen Clark, with 24 per cent of the vote, is beginning to open a lead over Victoria Cross recipient Willie Apiata, who has 21 per cent.

Sportsmen and women dominate the rest of the list, which also includes film director Peter Jackson, sexual abuse campaigner Louise Nicholas, World War II spy Nancy Wake and businessman Stephen Tindall.
Originally 20 names were put forward by a Herald panel. That list was narrowed down by readers writing on a Your Views question thread.
