Prime Minister Helen Clark has hinted that more information implicating the Exclusive Brethren in spreading false rumours about her husband will soon be revealed.
Miss Clark was this week forced to defend the sexuality of her husband, Peter Davis, after the Sunday Star-Times and Investigate magazine ran pictures of him
being hugged and apparently kissed by the couple's close friend Ian Scott on election night.
The picture was not new and was taken out of context from Prime TV's election night coverage.
However, its coverage follows rumours about Mr Davis which have been circulating for months and alluded to in Investigate magazine.
Miss Clark has blamed National and its supporters for spreading the false rumours.
She has also claimed she has been told the Exclusive Brethren had hired a private detective to follow the couple in an effort to dig personal dirt.
Today she again linked the Brethren to the rumours and hinted more evidence could soon be revealed.
"I do believe the Exclusive Brethren have had a hand in it as well, feeding off the Investigate magazine," she said on National Radio.
Asked if she had any proof of that she said: "Wait and see is my answer."
Beehive sources suggested a media organisation was preparing to reveal further details on the issue, possibly as early as today.
The Exclusive Brethren have denied hiring detectives to follow Miss Clark or her husband around.
However, the secretive sect appear to have dedicated themselves to unseating Labour.
They waged a campaign worth more than $500,000 attacking Labour in the lead up to last year's election and correspondence with the Chief Electoral Officer, released under the Official Information Act, shows they wanted to spend $1.2 million in support of National.
But they were told they if they did, that would be counted in National's spending.
Since the election Exclusive Brethren members have been frequent visitors to Parliament, watching from the public gallery on most sitting days.
