Dr Lindo Ferguson, a former Auckland civic leader and notable heritage campaigner, has died in the Far North, aged 90.
An ophthalmologist whose concern about Auckland's loss of heritage buildings lured him into local body politics in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, Dr Ferguson served as Auckland City Council deputy mayor, councillor and deputy chairman and member of the Auckland Regional Authority.
He also served as chairman of the Cornwall Park Trust Board, Auckland City Art Gallery and Library, chancellor of the University of Auckland and president of Auckland War Memorial Museum.
With wife Laetitia, he spent four decades restoring and refurbishing the 1840s house of William Butler at Mangonui, in Doubtless Bay, and last year formally reopened the Butler Point Whaling Museum.
Dr Ferguson served as chairman of the St John Ambulance Trust Board, director of the Rotary Club of Auckland and was a member of the Mackelvie Trust.
