KEY POINTS:
Palmerston North police are hunting the driver of a car which reached speeds of more than 160km/h in the city this morning.
Constable Peter Te Nahu said police started chasing the red Holden Commodore, registration NU7093, about 8am.
"The pursuit was abandoned shortly after on Ruahine Street after the vehicle drove on the wrong side of the road between Grey Street and the Palmerston North Hospital," Mr Te Nahu said.
"At the intersection of Featherston Street and Ruahine Street, the offending vehicle drove through a red light in excess of 100km/h and by swerving he narrowly avoided a collision with another vehicle."
The car was last seen speeding through the hospital carpark.
Police knew who the driver was but were yet to find him.
