Citroen has put a fresh face on this year's Xsara hatchback. The revised model now has striking ovoid headlights, bringing it in line with the corporate look of the Xantia/XM replacement, the C5.
The Xsara facelift also introduces some major mechanical changes. An 80kW 16-valve engine powers the entry-level 1.6-litre model and the 2-litre petrol powerplant has been upgraded to 100kW. The acclaimed 2.0 HDi common-rail turbo diesel stays, but is now available with a four-speed adaptive automatic gearbox.
Equipment on the $31,990 Xsara 1.6 includes dual adaptive airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic force distribution, and automatic air-conditioning.
The $37,990 2-litre Xsara adds side airbags, alloy wheels and automatic transmission as standard, plus a full body colour paint treatment.
Citroen New Zealand says is on a high over the Xsara's prospects. "We have worked hard with Citroen France to optimise the specification and pricing," says general manager Andrew Butchart.
Despite fine value for money and a reputation for excellent ride and handling, the pre-facelift Xsara remained a modest performer in New Zealand last year.
With total sales of 95 units for the year, it outshone Renault's Megane at 83, but wasn't in the same league as rival Europeans such as the Volkswagen Golf (340) or the aging Peugeot 306 (210).
