Staff about to be made redundant by the closure of Event Cinemas Highland Park movie theatre in Auckland, are protesting today about what they say is an unfair amount being offered as redundancy.
Unite Union organiser Joe Carolan says workers, some of whom have been at the theatre for 16 years, have been offered two weeks' pay as redundancy.
He says staff will carry the symbol of the worker, the red flag, outside the cinema tonight and on Wednesday when it closes for good.
"There's a big movie at the moment called Les Miserables where you can see what happens to the poor and workers when they don't get their rights. They stand up. So there's two big red flags flying at Event Cinemas."
