In the SPCA's annual Blessing of the Animals service, dogs sat in pews beside more than 200 volunteers as gold medallions honouring the Queen's 60th Diamond Jubilee were handed out.
"These unique medals are our way of paying tribute to our Auckland volunteers and thanking them for their invaluable help without which SPCA Auckland could not function," said executive director Bob Kerridge at the service.
The volunteers included collectors, dog walkers, animal village helpers, animal foster homes, outreach therapy pet volunteers and stray cat carers.
The medals were part of a limited production of 1000 presented to SPCA volunteers throughout New Zealand, imprinted "For Meritorious Volunteer Service" punctuated by paw prints.
