Not only is it the season to be jolly but it's also peak season for burglars to be on the prowl and ruin as many Christmases as possible.
The Insurance Council is reminding homeowners to protect their property and keep it secure before taking off on holiday.
A council spokesperson said its figures show there is traditionally a steep rise in burglary-related claims in the December-January period.
In January this year there were about 3100 burglary-related insurance claims from houses and commercial premises.
In the 12 months from July last year to June this year there were more than 30,000 burglary-related insurance claims totalling $15 million.
