A fire that forced a family of eight to flee their west Auckland home early today was deliberately lit, police say.
Emergency services were called to the blaze at a house in Henderson about 3am.
Fire Safety officer Linda McHugh said there were eight people in the house at the time, including two children. They escaped unhurt.
The fire, which investigations indicated was deliberately lit, caused extensive damage to the property, police said.
A male known to the occupants of the house was assisting police with their inquiries.
