City officials say they are confident the Christchurch Town Hall can be saved but the fate of the building will not be known until a series of building assessments are completed early next month.
After the February 22 earthquake the building was found to have structural damage and was one of many landmarks in an around the central business district which were red-stickered.
Mayor Bob Parker described the building as one of the city's great architectural icons.
"We need a clear understanding of the scale of the work required to preserve this wonderful building., We are determined to ensure the Town Hall continues to be one of the defining features of our city."
A series Geotechnical, structural and mechanical assessments should be completed early next month.
The complex which is situated on the bank of the River Avon and overlooks Victoria Square was officially opened on 30 September 1972.
