A teenage swimmer who went missing off Southshore beach in Christchurch has been found dead by a member of the public this morning.
Police launched a search yesterday with the assistance of CoastGuard, Surf Life Saving, and a Westpac Rescue Helicopter after a 19-year-old male went missing in the water about 3.10pm.
Police officers blocked off the beach while two distressed young swimmers sat near lifeguards at the scene.
The search was paused overnight and was set to recommence this morning.
“The team at Surf Life Saving New Zealand extends our heartfelt condolences to the whānau and friends of the deceased. We are providing support to the surf lifesavers involved,” a SLSNZ spokesperson said.
A Coastguard Sumner spokesperson said volunteers had stood down last night after searching in challenging conditions.
Volunteers on two rescue vessels from Coastguard Sumner – Hamilton Jet Rescue and Blue Arrow Rescue – and a jetski, Bruce Dawn Rescue, had joined the search.
