Two escapers from Christchurch's Paparua Prison have been recaptured after a short shopping trip into the city today.
Tai Gorrie, 17, and Samuel Pomare, 19 escaped from the prison about 10 am, stole a car and drove into Christchurch city.
The pair were sighted in the Barrington area of central Christchurch, at one stage at a shop in the mall.
Inspector Bob Palmer of the Police Southern Communication Centre said that a member of the public saw them acting suspicously and called police.
Police then began a door knocking operation after setting up a cordon around a building about five blocks from the mall.
The two men were caught in the building around 11.50 am.
Inspector Palmer said no force was necessary in recapturing the men and no injuries were sustained.
The stolen car was recovered and the pair would be returned to prison in due course, he said.
Inspector Palmer thanked the media for broadcasting progress reports and members of the public who had assisted with information.
