Staff at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology walked off the job today following a stop-work meeting.
The staff, who are members of the Tertiary Education Union (TEU), are unhappy at what a union official described as a proposal "to make them work more hours and take away their leave".
The teachers voted overwhelmingly to go on strike in response to their employer's proposal and went home this afternoon.
TEU members were now organising further industrial action and a team intend returning to the bargaining table to negotiate changes to the polytechnic's offer, the union said.
