After-match functions during the winter sports season will be targeted in a bid to curb drink driving and road trauma.
Canterbury police said they will focus particularly on rural sporting clubs and other social club rooms in a bid to keep roads safer.
Papanui Community Services Manager Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said every winter sports season police see serious crashes involving players who are often from rural areas.
"Rural community members need to start taking care of each other," he said.
"We want to see people plan ahead to ensure they have a sober driver, use courtesy vans, share the designated driver duties and to look out for their friends," he said.
