A judge has ordered a Kaiapoi man charged with the murder of a woman in the Christchurch suburb of Burwood to undergo a psychiatric report.
The 29-year-old farm hand was last night charged with murder after a woman's body was found by emergency services at a Travis Rd property, in Burwood, at about 10.15am yesterday.
The accused made his first appearance in the Christchurch District Court today. He has been granted interim name suppression.
The woman's name has also been suppressed at the request of the police. All other details of the case were also suppressed.
The psychiatrist's preliminary opinion, relayed to judge Robert Murfitt, was that there should be "a justifiable inquiry to assess the availability of an insanity defence''.
