Container freight movements are not expected to resume across Lyttelton's wharves for several more days, although the earthquake-shaken port is preparing to receive a tanker of fuel supplies on Saturday.
Chief executive Peter Davie said he expected his oil berth to be fully operational by tomorrow.
But although the container wharves had also escaped major damage, urgent minor works were needed before limited container operations could resume in three to four days.
His best estimate for the time it would take to return to normal service levels was 10 days.
