KEY POINTS:
Christchurch Casino is under investigation for alleged loan sharking and financial irregularities, it was reported today.
Internal Affairs Minister Rick Barker said he was extremely concerned by the allegations and confirmed his department had started the inquiry.
The Press newspaper reported that the inquiry followed allegations about problems at the casino, including the resignation of top staff, loan sharking, allegations of prize draw irregularities and discrepancies over gaming returns to the department.
The newspaper reported on Saturday that two loan sharks were funding high stakes problem gamblers.
Casino board chairman Barry Thomas has previously described the claims as "outlandish" and "absolute rubbish".
Mr Thomas is understood to be overseas and casino management could not be contacted for comment last night.
