Life Flight's Westpac rescue helicopter rescued an injured tramper on Sunday morning in the Tararua ranges.
The patient, a 20-year-old woman from Wellington, had sustained a leg injury on Saturday while tramping and was carried for an hour by members of her party to the Mitre Flat Hut.
Crewman Colin Larsen said she had spent an uncomfortable night in the hut before one member of the party walked to get cellphone coverage to call for help.
"The helicopter was able to land in a small clearing next to Mitre Hut. The woman's leg was immobilised and she was given pain relief before being flown by the helicopter crew to Wellington Hospital, where she is being assessed and treated for her injury."
