The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management has issued a warning for East Cape, Chatham Islands, Coromandel and Banks Peninsula after a magnitude-8.3 earthquake shook Chile's capital.
It tweeted that people in the above coastal areas should stay out of the water and stay off beaches and shore areas. "Do not go sightseeing, share this information with family, neighbours and friends."
The tsunami warning would remain in effect until a cancellation message was issued.
