KEY POINTS:
Four children were lucky to escape without serious injury after a jetskier ploughed into them.
The drama unfolded at Ohiwa Harbour in Whakatane yesterday at about 5pm.
Police believe a 13-year-old boy accidentally swam into the ski lane, causing the collision, which also involved three other youngsters.
The teenager was treated for minor injuries but the other three escaped with no more than cuts and bruises.
Northern Communications Ambulance spokesman Charlie Bougher said staff from two units treated the children on the spot, but none of them required a trip to hospital.
Mr Bougher said that considering the circumstances, the children were lucky. "It was very fortunate that no one suffered serious injuries. It potentially could have been much worse."
The jetskier also suffered minor injuries after he lost control and fell from his ski.
Inspector Barry Smalley, of the police northern communications centre, said police were investigating the incident.
It comes less than a week after two people died and two were seriously injured on the Kawarau River in Central Otago when a jetski collided with a jetboat.
