KEY POINTS:
A man is in police custody after allegedly stabbing his three young children with a carving knife in suburban Lower Hutt today.
Police told NZPA a four-month-old baby received serious wounds to the stomach and was rushed to Wellington Hospital.
Two others, aged two and four, received cuts to their throats. They were initially taken to Lower Hutt Hospital, and one was then transferred to Wellington.
The children's mother had been in the house but escaped and called police from nearby shops about 4.20pm. Police had to break down the door of the Wilkie Crescent house, then use a taser gun to subdue the man.
He had been taken to the Lower Hutt police station and was speaking to police.
Neighbours told NZPA the family moved into the house only last week.
