The young children critically burnt in a Gisborne car fire are making a slow recovery in an Auckland hospital.
The brother and sister who were pulled from their mother's burning car parked outside an automotive shop are today in a "fair" condition at Middlemore Hospital, a spokeswoman for the Counties Manukau District Health Board says.
It is an improvement for the siblings, who have previously been listed as critical while being closely monitored in the intensive care ward for more than two weeks.
Manaia Namana-Rowe, 3, and her brother, 22-month-old Rious Namana-Rowe, suffered burns to 40 per cent of their bodies when their mother's car burst into flames on April 4.
A surgeon at Middlemore Hospital's National Burn Centre said the duo would likely face dozens of surgeries and several months in hospital before they could return home.
