An Auckland man who took sexual photos of a young Russian girl has been sent to jail.

In December Glenn Roderick Holland, 67, was found guilty of a charge of being party to sexual conduct with a child overseas, after Customs officers found hundreds of pornographic photos on his computer, including those of a 7-year-old girl with another man.

He had previously pleaded guilty to a second charge of possession of objectionable photos.

He is one of the first New Zealanders to be convicted of committing a crime against children overseas.

Holland was due to be sentenced on the two charges last week but it was delayed when he started vomiting while in the dock and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

He is a diabetic, and had ingested a sugary substance in court before becoming ill.

The Auckland police child exploitation team, led by Detective Tony Bruce, were able to lay the serious sex charge when they learned the identity of the young victim in Moscow.

For the first time in such a case in New Zealand, investigators were able to interview the victim and her mother, who flew to Auckland to give evidence against Holland.

He pleaded guilty to a representative charge of of possession of objectionable photos, but denied the sexual conduct charge.

In Auckland District Court today, Holland was sentenced to three years in jail for being a party to sexual conduct with a child outside New Zealand, reported TVNZ.

On a second count of knowingly being in possession of objectionable images he was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, to be served concurrently, the network reported.

Holland has travelled widely and built a career of taking sexually provocative pictures of young girls, taking advantage of lax child protection laws in some European countries such as Russia and Germany.

He has a long history of taking provocative photographs of young girls, as well as of sexual offending against models.

He was sentenced in 1988 to two years' jail in Australia for sexually assaulting a young girl he had with him for a photographic modelling assignment.
