A child who was sitting outside the Eketahuna Four Square store on Saturday had a lucky escape when a car crashed into the front of the store, narrowly missing the youngster.
The crash happened about 3.45pm when the car careered into the front of the store, causing substantial damage. The child had been sitting outside the store at a table a metre or so from where the crash occurred.
A passerby, who did not wish to be named, said it was thought the driver of the car, which had two occupants, mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.
There were several people in the store when the crash happened but nobody was injured. The passerby said in the aftermath of the incident, customers were talking about how lucky the child had been to have emerged unscathed.
Police attended the scene and the Eketahuna fire brigade was called out and pushed the car off the footpath.
