A family-owned business has closed its doors after a 4-year-old boy was fatally injured by a forklift yesterday.
The child received medical attention after being hit by the forklift but died at the residential property in rural Prebbleton, just south of Christchurch.
The Herald understands the 4-year-old's dad is a Lincoln volunteer firefighter, a brigade which had two units respond to the tragic worksite incident.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand Area Commander Dave Berry said their thoughts are with the family and everyone involved in this deeply sad event.
"We are providing support to the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade including counselling and professional psychological support if required.
