A child has been taken to hospital after being hit by a car outside a Lower Hutt school this morning.
Senior Sergeant Mike Hill of the Lower Hutt police said, contrary to initial reports, it was not a hit-and-run accident.
The child -- believed to be a boy -- was hit outside Naenae School on Rata Street around 10.30am.
Police were still at the scene interviewing a number of witnesses, Mr Hill said this morning.
The child had been taken to hospital but his condition was not known at this time.
