KEY POINTS:
Paraparaumu street lights are being urgently checked tonight after a child received an electric shock this morning.
Kapiti Coast District Council spokesman Tony Cronin said the child, whose age was not known, received a "mild shock" in Riwai Street, Paraparaumu.
"There was nothing damaging about it - but there could have been," he told NZPA.
All street lamp poles installed at the same time as the faulty one would be tested to make sure they were safe.
"Contractors will work through the night to isolate the more than 50 (poles) involved and all will be checked in the morning for any other problems with wiring," Mr Cronin said.
"As a result some street lights in the district will be turned off progressively during the night.
Residents should treat all street light poles as potentially live, he said.
