Child dies in Northland crash

A child has died and five people been hurt after two separate road accidents in Northland early today.

Shortly before 8am police were told of a damaged vehicle on SH1, 15km south of Kaitaia. The vehicle had rolled.

Sergeant Alison Holdaway of Kaitaia police said a child had died in the accident.

A woman was also seriously injured and it was believed that her condition had deteriorated and there were now fears she might die.

Ms Holdaway said it appeared no other vehicles were involved in the crash but she could not say if alcohol or drugs contributed.

In the other accident four people were hurt when a car crashed on SH12, 2km south of Kaikohe.

Two of the injured were flown to Whangarei Hospital and two were taken by ambulance to Bay of Islands Hospital.
