A six year old boy took to his father with a vacuum cleaner pipe after he witnessed him assault his partner and threaten her with a knife, a court was told.
The New Plymouth District Court was told on Friday that after the assault and his son's retaliation, Darren Bryan Lockley went to leave the house.
On his way out he opened kitchen cupboards and emptied the contents on the floor, further angering his son who followed him and hit him on the nose and leg with the vacuum pipe, the Taranaki Daily News reported.
Lockley was sentenced to nine months community detention and ordered to undertake the same length of intensive supervision on charges of assault, possession of a weapon and driving while disqualified.
