A truck crash northwest of Napier early yesterday left its driver in hospital and drums of hazardous chemicals on the roadside.
Sergeant Nigel Hurley said the truck, from Taupo, crashed off State Highway 5 between Te Pohue and Eskdale.
Fire officers carted the drums, some with potassium chloride, to Napier.
Fire Communications Centre shift manager David Meikle said it appeared one of the drums had split but there was only a small spillage.
