KEY POINTS:
A chemical spill at a factory in Christchurch, which put nine people in hospital today, has been contained.
The spill at Shape Technology, a sheet metal factory, on Clarence Street South in Addington, happened at around 9am.
A Fire Service spokesman said the chemical spill had been contained and firefighters were clearing the scene.
Cordons had been removed from around the factory.
The spill was of the chemical trichloroethylene, a commonly used non-flammable industrial solvent.
St John Ambulance said the nine people were taken to Christchurch Hospital with a variety of symptoms, including eye irritation, sore throats and coughing.
