Firefighters in protective suits are at a helicopter repair depot in south Auckland after about 100 litres of chemical spilled from a storage tank.
The chemical was believed to be chromic acid which leaked from a container at Airwork (NZ) Limited at Ardmore Airport.
The Fire Service said about 100 litres leaked from a tank holding about 500 litres.
The workshop had been evacuated and it had yet to be decided how to treat the spill, Fire Service northern communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said.
"It is still leaking. The building has been evacuated. There were some staff on site.
"They are attempting to stop the leak," he said.
