The Dunedin City Council swung into emergency mode yesterday after dangerous levels of caustic soda entered Mosgiel's water supply when a water treatment station next to the town's swimming pool malfunctioned.
Caustic soda can cause lasting damage if swallowed, left on the skin for long periods or rubbed into the eyes. Yesterday's alert was sparked by swimmers showering at the Mosgiel pool.
