A 20-year-old Nelson chef has admitted performing an indecency on a 14-year-old girl after encouraging her to send him sexual text messages.
The man was granted interim name suppression when he appeared in Nelson District Court yesterday, but was warned it was unlikely to be continued once he was sentenced on June 2.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Wayne Johnston said the man struck up a friendship with the girl in March. She was 14 at the time.
Mr Johnston said the pair communicated by text messaging, and the man "encouraged" the girl to talk about sex in the messages.
On March 19, the man drove the girl to his flat and invited her into his bedroom.
"She freely went along and engaged in kissing, but once he started removing her clothing, she became unsure," Mr Johnston said.
The man then performed an indecency and oral sex on her.
The distressed girl then left, Mr Johnston said. She told a friend what had happened, and family members contacted the police.
The man handed himself in to police, and admitted that he knew the girl was younger than 16, Mr Johnston said.
Judge Mike Behrens remanded the man on bail until June 2 for a pre-sentence report.
