A culinary challenge is set to increase the wedge between the North and South Islands - which makes the best cheese roll?
The delicacy is usually created by covering a slice of bread in a cheese-based filling, rolling it into a tube and toasting it.
Connoisseurs have been asked to send their best attempt for taste and scientific testing at the New Zealand International Science Festival in Dunedin.
The winning rolls will be sent to Otago University's food science department for analysis. They will be recreated and sold at Dunedin cafe Mojo for a week, with proceeds going to charity.
Judge Tony Heptinstall was expecting about 300 entries. The competition runs from July 6-11 click here for details.
