Pupils from eight schools pitted chess skills against the clock at the Carterton School Take Note Primary Chess competition at Carterton School yesterday.
South End School took the award for top junior team, while Masterton Intermediate School claimed the senior team prize.
Kim Juno from Take Note Carterton sponsored the tournament's prizes, worth nearly $300, said spokeswoman Ronny Tankersley. Organiser Bruce Pollard said he enjoyed seeing the young players' joy. "More importantly, it's also learning."
