KEY POINTS:
Drivers in South Auckland and Hamilton can save almost $2 filling up an average 60-litre family car.
The Gull stations in Ti Rakau Drive, Manukau and Norton Rd, Hamilton are charging $2.07.9 for a litre of 91 octane - the cheapest of dozens of sites surveyed by the Herald on Sunday yesterday.
The next-best price was $2.10.9, at all other Gull stations, all Challenge stations, and company-owned Caltex and Shell stations.
Mobil's cheapest price was $2.11.9, while BP stations were the most expensive, charging a minimum of $2.12.9.
The so-called "big four" oil companies said independently owned sites could charge what they liked, and it paid to check at Shell, Mobil, BP and Caltex outlets, especially in more rural areas.
The cheapest 95 octane was $2.15.9 at all Challenge and most Shell stations. BP was charging a minimum of $2.18.9.
The other premium fuel, 98 octane, was yesterday priced at $2.20.9 at most Gull stations, cheaper than Mobil's standard price of $2.21.9 and BP's $2.26.9.
The standard price of diesel is $1.83.9 everywhere but BP - again the most expensive at $1.85.9.
But a mini price war on Roscommon Rd means motorists can fill up for $1.81.9 per litre at Gull or Shell.
Likewise, 98 octane at the Mobil station in Oteha Valley, Albany is a cent cheaper than other Mobils, to match the prices offered by Gull across the road.
