The Automobile Association is advising motorists to check pump prices before filling up after a 4c-a-litre increase in petrol prices.
AA public affairs director George Fairbairn said the increase, which came after a price drop earlier in the month, raised questions about a sudden reversal of the trend.
A Shell spokesman said the increase reflected overseas price rises.
Mr Fairbairn urged motorists to check the price showing on the pump matched the price displayed on boards.
