The Chatham Islands' long-serving mayor, Patrick Smith, has resigned.
Mr Smith, who has served as mayor since 1992, was awarded a QSO for community service in 2004.
He has farmed on the Chathams for more than 50 years and long-time friend Hugh Rennie, QC, said he was committed to conservation.
"His commitment to conservation values, his sense of history and his own ethical standards are reflected in the work he has undertaken for conservation and historical reserves," Mr Rennie said.
Mr Smith told NZPA he was stepping down for personal reasons, and to give others a chance to make their mark.
Alfred Preece will act as mayor until the next local body elections, in October.
