Wairarapa United are through to the quarter-finals of the country's premier club football competition, the Chatham Cup.
Their gripping 1-0 extra time win over Wellington United at Newtown Park on Saturday was a piece of footballing history as it made them the very first team from the Wairarapa region to make the last eight of this prestigious knockout series.
The random draw for the quarter-finals won't be made until tomorrow but there is a 50-50 chance Wairarapa United will have a home game and, if so, it will very probably be played in Masterton with the Pugh Sports Bowl or the Queen Elizabeth Park oval the most likely venues.
Unfortunately for Wairarapa United, however, it seems almost certain they will be without two of their star performers, Pita Rabo and Miroslav Tvaroh, for their next cup game.
Desperate efforts to find Rabo work in the Wairarapa region have been unsuccessful and he is due to leave for Auckland later this week to take up a job opportunity there. He has been a wonderful servant for Wairarapa United over the past seven years and the same can be said of Tvaroh, who has to return to Czechoslovakia to renew his visa. He too is scheduled to leave this week.
Former Wairarapa United player James Oxtoby has been signed to replace Tvaroh but a replacement for Rabo has not been made with Wairarapa United officials holding onto slim hopes that employment can still be found for him here.
Coach Phil Keinzley was "absolutely rapt" with Saturday's win over Wellington United, the winning goal coming from Seule Soromon in the first period of extra time.
"It was one of those games where you always had the feeling you were going to win. It was just a case of staying patient and composed until the break came," Keinzley said. "Maybe we should have got another couple of goals as well but we'll take the one, that's all we needed in the end."
It was Wellington United who called the tune in the opening half period with their dangerous Argentinian striker Emiliano Tade prominent. But the teams went to halftime at 0-0.
The quality of football went up a notch in the second spell as both sides looked to break the deadlock but despite several good chances it was still 0-0 at 90 minutes. It was now into the first period of extra time and after 5min came what was to be the only goal of the match.
Pita Rabo's kick was not held cleanly by McKay and Soromon swooped to put the rebound into the net.
Wairarapa United 1, Wellington United 0.
There was no further addition to the score before the whistle sounded to signal the end of the first 15min of play.
The second period of extra time started with Wairarapa United in command and a shot from replacement Campbell Banks was turned around the post. There were other chances that went begging but the final whistle sounded and the celebrations in the Wairarapa United camp began in earnest.
