A police pursuit that ended in a crash, a carjacking and a fire in a police vehicle kept Auckland police on the hop last night.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle being chased ploughed into another car on the corner of Great North Rd and Ash St in Avondale at 10.40 pm and the driver fled on foot.
Shortly afterwards he apparently hijacked a car with an occupant near the accident scene.
The occupant was dropped off at a city service station an hour later.
The events began when a Henderson traffic patrol stopped a car. The driver then hopped back into the vehicle, later discovered to be stolen, and drove off at high speed.
Police pursued him for 2km until he crashed into another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was taken to Auckland Hospital with minor injuries.
A police car called to the pursuit caught fire.
Firefighters had difficulty extinguishing the blaze, because of fears that ammunition in the vehicle might explode.
Chase, hijacking and police car blaze keep cops busy
