KEY POINTS:
The Auckland policeman alleged to have injured a teenager during a pursuit has been named in court.
Aaron Jacob Holmes, 29, appeared in the Auckland District Court yesterday charged with careless driving causing injury. He entered no plea.
Mr Holmes was chasing a vehicle on August 3 after it sped away from a nearby alcohol checkpoint. The driver was never caught. Mr Holmes' unmarked police car struck a lamp-post, causing it to fall on to 13-year-old Farhat Buksh, who was walking over a pedestrian crossing outside Owairaka School in Richardson Rd.
Farhat was seriously injured, suffering brain injuries and a fractured neck but has since been given the all-clear by surgeons on his neck injury.
He has returned to Mt Roskill Grammar School for a few hours a day.
Mr Holmes' lawyer asked for an adjournment because there was a large amount of evidence he needed to read, including a report from the serious crash unit. Mr Holmes wouldn't comment after his brief court appearance. He will be back before the court on December 13.
This month it was announced the Police Complaints Authority would carry out a review of the rules around police chases after concerns over the number of pursuits that have caused serious injuries.
