A former Kiwi sheep-shearer has been snapped rubbing shoulders with the upper echelons of royalty after marrying into the British monarchy.
Gisborne-born Gary Lewis made headlines in 2004 when he married Lady Davina Windsor, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and 20th in line to the throne.
Last week, photos of Lewis at the wedding of the Queen's eldest grandchild, Peter Phillips, and Autumn Kelly at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, went around the world. It was attended by the Queen, Prince Charles, Camilla Parker-Bowles, Princess Beatrice and Prince Harry among other royal figures.
Metres from the head of the monarchy, Lewis, 37, can be seen in a dapper-looking suit, with wife Davina, 30, in a blue and pink outfit holding his hand.
Lewis' mother Viki Carr, who lives in Auckland, was tightlipped on her son's new life, but confirmed to the Herald on Sunday he was at the royal occasion. "They are both a private couple... They try to avoid [the attention]. What I can say is he is happy, they are both very happy."
Carr said the pair "came in and out of the country" to visit, and she visits them in England, where Lewis still works as a cabinetmaker.
Asked if Lewis enjoyed such occasions as weddings, Carr said: "I guess it's something he officially has to do. It's a way of supporting the couple and the family."
The photos have caused controversy after being sold to Hello! magazine for £500,000 ($1,258,572) without the Queen's knowledge. And while Prince William's girlfriend Kate Middleton and Prince Harry's girlfriend Chelsy Davy were present, they did not appear in official photos so as not to overshadow the bride and groom.
"Gazza" and "Denny", as Lewis and Davina were known to friends, met in Bali and lived in a flat in Grey Lynn, Auckland, for more than a year before getting married.
