Organiser Roger Hoar is confident of a big turnout for the Masterton Park Bowling Club's open day on Saturday, the highlight of which will be a novel event which will make the winner $500 richer.
"We've had a lot of inquiries from people who are keen to come along and have a go, hopefully we'll see many new faces among them," Hoar said. "The emphasis will be on showing what a fun game bowls can be and attracting more people into the sport. Those are the prime objectives."
The novel event will see participants aiming to land bowls supplied by the club fully in small circles which will be near the end of two of the all-weather rinks. This action will get under way at 11am and go through to 4pm when those who find the target will be involved in a playoff for $500.
Each bowl in what is being labelled the "bowls challenge" will be delivered at a cost of $1 with all proceeds going towards the $90,000 being sought by the Masterton Park club to returf their artificial green which is in urgent need of repair.
All non-registered bowlers who take part in the open day, whether or not they compete in the novel event, will be granted a free winter membership of the Park club as an extra incentive for them to take up outdoor bowls regularly.
